A World of Folk, 2008

Designs from Alabama Chanin are included in the exhibition “A World of Folk” in Stavanger, Norway Curated by internationally renowned trend forecaster, Lidewij “Li” Edelkoort, the design exhibition celebrates Stavanger as the 2008 Capital of Culture of the European Union.

View on Colour: A World of Folk, a catalog accompanying the exhibition, thoughtfully questions the elements at work in creating a global identity and how craft, making, and the objects we wear and live with, construct and give life to these identities., Li Edelkoort and Mary Miller, director of Stavanger 2008, collected work from vanguard designers around the world whose work speaks to these representations and cultural milieus, through exploration of color, texture, materials, motifs, and more.

“The revival of folklore and local flavour has echoed a fresh creative aesthetic in a wish to disconnect from the past and reinvent the future purely along contemporary ideas. Therefore this back-to-the-roots movement is no longer nostalgic and romantic, but grown up and destined to become seriously designed, ecologically sound and sustainably stylish; merging tradition with technology to become a 21st century phenomenon.” —Li Edelkoort from View on Colour: A World of Folk (pages 102–103)
